Study: Cherry juice could aid in marathon recovery

Antioxidant-rich cherry juice could help speed the recovery of endurance athletes according to a recent study by Dr Glyn Howatson, exercise physiologist and Laboratory Director in the School of Psychology and Sports Sciences, Northumbria University.

Howatson researched the effect drinking Montmorency cherry juice had on athletes who ran the London marathon. Runners who were given cherry juice recovered their strength faster than runners given a placebo in the 48-hours following the race.

Howatson told the London Telegraph: “The phytochemicals, in particular, anthocyanins found in Montmorency cherries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidating properties, which the research has shown to be effective in helping exercises to recover from strenuous physical activity.”

The doctor suggested the findings could also be relevant for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
